Farm Education

Burton Lazars Farms is a mixed, family farm based close to Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire specialising in sustainable, regenerative agriculture. Our farm extends to 1400 acres, growing beef cattle, rare breed sheep and arable crops such as wheat, barley, beans, and oats.

What's on offer?

The farm has a fantastic array of habitats with woodland, hedgerows and water courses crisscrossing the landscape, lending itself as a classroom for a plethora of subjects beyond food production. We can tailor visits to suit specific aspects of the curriculum, from food science, to art, to science, history, maths and more. We are CEVAS accredited (Countryside Educational Visits Accreditation Scheme) which means we have undergone training to host visits safely and effectively.

How it works?

Visiting a farm is a fantastic way to link a classroom topic to a "real world" example. Farming encompasses an incredibly broad range of subjects from maths to geography to biology and even art and history. We can assess the biodiversity of a hedgerow, mix cattle feeds, count worms, formulate business plans - the list is endless!
Need a hand narrowing it down? Simply choose from one of the three topics below and we will create a programme of activities specific to the age group visiting and the curriculum area.

Meet the team

Tess Lincoln
Tess grew up on a farm in Lincolnshire and started farming here with husband Tom at Burton Lazars in 2012 after graduating from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Agriculture. Tess and Tom have two children, Harry and Sophie who love to join in with the farm too!
Tom Lincoln
Tom began working on the farm in 2008. He has a passion for engineering and when he isn’t out with shepherding with his sheepdog Joey, or in the workshop, you can find him in our on-farm butchery prepping lamb orders for collection.
Joanne Potts
Jo comes from an education background, having been a college lecturer for many years specialising in equine studies. A career change saw her begin work on the farm in 2023 and she is now trained in all aspects of farm work, from driving the combine harvester to moving sheep.
